Mornington Field & Game Safety Protocol Equipment and Conduct.
Mandatory protective equipment including eye, ear, and enclosed footwear must be worn by everyone on the shooting ground.
- Valid firearm licences matching the category of shotgun used must be held by all shooters
- Junior Shooters (aged 12 years or over) must use firearms under the immediate supervision of adult holding a current firearm licence.
- Unlicensed shooters must use firearms under the immediate supervision of adult holding a current firearm licence and must not carry the firearm whilst outside the shooting stand.
- All shooters must register in the visitor book upon arrival at the branch.
- All shooters new to this range must make themselves known upon registration, read and understand this document as well as have their firearm inspected for range compliance
- Non hinging, magazine fed, shotguns such as semi auto, straight-pull/push button and lever action are prohibited at Mornington Field & Game. (the only exclusion being medical exempt Category C licence holders using semi autos)
Core Firearm Safety
- Treat every firearm as loaded at all times.
- Keep actions and breeches always open, except when you are actively on the shooting stand and it is your turn.
- Carry your firearm with muzzles facing forward
- Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are on target and ready to shoot.
- Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, down range or toward an approved target area.
- In the event of a misfire, wait 20 seconds before opening the gun.
Range Protocols
- Only club officials are allowed to reload, repair, or attend to malfunctioning traps.
- A cease fire is signalled with a single, extended air horn blast
- Open actions and remove cartridges on firearms then step out of the shooting stand when a ceasefire is signalled.
- The return to shooting is signalled with three short air horn blasts, at which stage it is deemed safe to step into the shooting stand and recommence shooting. Shot Load & Pellet Size Regulations
- Maximum Payload Weight: 12 and 20-gauge cartridges to a maximum load of 28 grams (1 oz) to reduce range fallback distances.
- Maximum Pellet Size Steel Shot Only is permitted up to No. 6 size or smaller (e.g., No. 7.5, No. 8, or No. 9).
- All-Round Performance: 28-gram loads of No. 7.5 shot are the benchmark choice for simulated field targets.
End of Day Range Access
- Do not enter the field until the final hooter is sounded.
- The field is deemed safe to enter upon the signal of a short single air horn blast.
- If you are not familiar with traps stay well away from them.
- Do not stand in front of a loaded trap at any time.
- Keep all body parts out-side the safety loop.
- Only authorised committee members to reload traps.
- Only authorised committee members to arm or disarm traps.
